Statistics & Awards

Statistics: • Written and processed approximately three hundred structures for local historic designation.
• Published two posters, one history, and several informational program booklets.
• Staff has been invited to speak about Coral Gables initiatives in historic preservation by National, State, and local Preservation groups.
• Staff co-chaired the annual conference of the Society of Architectural Historians in June 2000, and served as the moderator for a session about the importance
• Wrote and processed the National Historic Landmark Designation of the Biltmore Hotel, the Hotel becoming one of the three National Historic Landmarks in Dade County.
• Facilitated and wrote the National Register of Historic Places nomination for the 'Mac Farlane Homestead Historic District,' Coral Gables only African-American enclave.
• Written grants for the rehabilitation of our publicly owned historic properties totaling over one million dollars.
• Conducted 'historic structures surveys' of the “The Plantation District", and the Central Business District, and is currently preparing the necessary documents to contract for a Citywide survey of historic properties.
Awards: 1973
First Municipality in Dade County to Adopt an Historic Preservation Ordinance.

1985
Ordinance Certified by the Department of Interior.

1986
Certified by National Park Service as a Certified Local Government (Sixth in the State of Florida).

1994
Award for Innovative Preservation Legislation, “The Coral Gables Cottage Ordinance”. The Florida Trust for Historic Preservation.

1994
City of Coral Gables becomes the first municipality in the State to adopt Ad Valorem Tax Exemption legislation for historic preservation, in conjunction with Miami-Dade County government.
