HISTORIC LANDSCAPES

The development of the landscaping of the public areas of Coral Gables has a rich history.  Although not all of the specifics mentioned in early historic publications on the subject were implemented, it is clear that the City planners of that period set the City on its journey towards the beautifully landscaped boulevards, parkways and parks for which the City is highly regarded today.  They set the corner stone on which the expectation for high quality public landscaping in Coral Gables is now built.  The early planning for the landscaping of the City elevated the considerations made for the natural environment to near equal those made for the built environment.  The result is a City where architecture and plantings harmonize to create an aesthetic product greater than the sum of two parts.

Below are several documents and photographs that depict the early landscape from the City and the thoughts of early landscape planners on the subject.  From them, inspiration is still drawn by those currently involved with further developing the landscaped environment of the City.
